Ten people were removed from the Potomac River by crews in Montgomery County and Fairfax County after they were stranded on an island and their kayak went rogue and floated downstream.

A Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said the call came in shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 6, when the agency's Swift Water Team was called int o assist a group whose red kayak floated away, leaving them adrift on the island.

According to the official, while dealing with that initial call, a second came in about a person in the water near Blockhouse Point.

In total, 10 people were remove from the river, with an assist from a Maryland State Police helicopter, which removed three adults with their basket.

All 10 were treated and evaluated by paramedics at the scene, but all refused transport to area hospitals. It is unclear what caused them to become distressed.
